The Dartmouth Club of Washington, DC annually bestows the Daniel Webster Distinguished Service Award on members of the Dartmouth family who honor Dartmouth through distinguished public service. In 2005, the Club honored Stephen J. Pollak '50 for his unmatched record of leadership and personal commitment to programs of social justice and anti-discrimination in Washington. He was Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in the late 60's, President of the D.C. Bar, and is a founder of the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. He has tirelessly promoted better access to legal representation by under-served members of our Washington community. The ceremony was held at The Freedom Forum in Arlington, VA with spectacular views overlooking the Potomac and the monuments and was attended by over 70 guests including local alumni, former honorees and College officials. Our coverage of this event includes:

This event would not have been possible without the help of numerous individuals. First and foremost, our host Peter Pritchard, Class of 66 and President of The Freedom Forum, himself a Webster Award recipient in 1999. He has graciously hosted this event and numerous others for us in this wonderful setting and the Club is grateful to him for his continued generosity. The members of our organizing committee: Chuck Sherman '66 and Carrie Hoverman '01. Club Presidents Emeriti: Da'aga Hill Bowman '79 helped with promotion and Wayne Bardsley '70 offered a wealth of institutional knowledge. Allison Malley '98 produced the program. Club Treasurer David Millane '67 collected all the registrations and donations, which is a lot more work than most realize. Steve Donovan '85A and Bobbi Mathieu in the Alumni Office were indispensable in assisting us with the invitations and the name tags. And last but certainly not least, Chuck Sherman '66, who played a leadership role from the beginning as part of our nominating committee through to the end as presenter of the award. This is the seventh year in which Chuck has played this role and the Club is very grateful for his leadership. Thank you all!
