Dartmouth Aires: “Sing Off” Finalists
As you know, our own Dartmouth Aires came in second in The Sing Off championship.
Want to see The Dartmouth Aires in person? The Dartmouth Club of Maryland invites all D.C.-area alumni to attend their annual holiday party.
Click here for details about that event.
Highlights
On Saturday, September 10, a group of 20 some Dartmouth alums of all ages
enjoyed our second 9/11 National Day of Service visit to the Washington Home, a hospice and senior
citizens home in Northwest D.C. After serious gardening and cleanup work outside, several alums visited
with residents of the home – several charmingly dressed up for the occasion. Thanks to Amanda
Winthers ’09 who organized the event. Later that same day, Nathan Swire ’11, who had
participated in the Washington Home event, rode his bike out to Tacoma Park, Maryland, and participated
in the Club’s Fall Bike Ride – a ride of some 26 miles followed by a Scotch After-Party.
Our first “Iron Man” award goes to Nathan for his amazing feat.
The following Saturday, another group of D.C. alums ventured down to Annapolis for a seafood lunch with
members of the Maryland club, followed by a walking tour of historic Annapolis, and then a sunset
schooner cruise. A fine time was had by all. We’ll definitely be doing more events with our
Maryland club friends. Check out photos on the club website.
Monday night, September 19, found some 60 of us gathered at KStreet Lounge for a Fall Happy Hour and tv
watch of the Dartmouth Aires on NBC’s The Sing Off competition. The good guys are
moving on. So we’re hoping for another fun tv watching event in November when the Aires reach the
finals.
Call for Interviewers
Alumni volunteers are needed to interview applicants to the College, for both
early decision, primarily in November, and regular decision, primarily in January and February. If
you’re interested, please e-mail your District Enrollment Director by clicking one of the following links:
Howard Morse (Maryland), Trina Santry (Virginia), or
David Hawkins (D.C.).
Alumni Survey
After months of work and review, our club’s first online survey of D.C. area alumni
interests is expected to be e-mailed to all area alums later this month. Be alert for this important
e-mail, and take the time to complete and return the survey. The results will help your Dartmouth club
improve our programs and respond to your interests and preferences.
From the Green by Vanessa Trinh ’14
Vanessa Trinh ’14, and one of the club’s scholarship recipients, one of our student speakers at
last year’s Holiday Dinner, has agreed to provide a short blog for publication
each month – letting us in on her personal perspectives on events in Hanover.
Click here for Vanessa’s first report.
Daniel Webster Award: Nominations Open, Volunteers Needed
Submit your nomination today for the
recipient of our club’s 25th annual Daniel Webster Award. Nominations will be accepted via our
online portal, or by e-mail, through October 31, 2011. Selection of the awardee will be made by
majority vote of Dartmouth club of Washington D.C. board members present at the November board
meeting.
Our Webster Chair and club Vice President David Mustra, along with our two Webster Co-Chairs, Kevin
Hudak and Howard Morse, would appreciate volunteers to help with scholarship outreach in association
with next spring’s Webster Award ceremony. To submit your nomination or volunteer to
participate in this important endeavor, click here.
Coordinators for Family-Focused and Other Events Needed
If you have ideas for club events, or would just
like to help organize events over the coming year, please click
here to let Bob Davidson hear from you. Right now, we’re especially looking for volunteers to organize
family-focused events as well as seminars/book talks with Dartmouth authors and faculty.
Youthbuild Mentoring and Tutoring Program
The club is again collaborating with YouthBuild, an
innovative public charter school located in Columbia Heights that serves young people ages 16-18 who
have dropped out of traditional high schools. A dozen passionate Dartmouth alums participated in this
program last year, and YouthBuild is eager for new Dartmouth alumni volunteers to work with young
people in this program. For further details please e-mail Adam Tapley ’03 by clicking
here.
The Dartmouth Public Service Fellowships Program
is looking for alums interested in helping young
Dartmouth grads starting careers in public service. The program places Dartmouth grads in year-long
fellowships working with nonprofits, public agencies, and innovative for-profits that focus on the
common good. You can mentor a fellow, help organize an event with fellows, or identify new partner
organizations. To learn more, e-mail Adam Tapley ’03, D.C. area coordinator, by clicking
here.
Monthly E-Newsletter
The club is now using the College’s database for all e-mail
messages to D.C.-area alumni. If you are not receiving the club’s monthly e-mail newsletter, please update your
e-mail address in the College's database by e-mailing Alumni Records
or calling (603) 646-2253.
LinkedIn Connection
Go to LinkedIn website, search for
“Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C.”, and join our group. For more details, click here.
Monthly Meetings
All DC area alumni are welcome to attend our monthly Board meetings, where we plan future events. There is no meeting in August; meetings will resume in September. Please
e-mail Bob Davidson to learn the date and location of our next meeting.
Needed: Venues for club events One of the most difficult aspects of planning club events is finding good venues—at no or
low cost. If you have or your company has a conference space in downtown D.C. or a suburban location near a Metro that can accommodate 50 or more
people and can be volunteered for Dartmouth club events, e.g., book talks, faculty seminars, student networking events, please give Bob Davidson
a shout by e-mail or call him at (703) 532-1916.
Young Alumni Sub-Committee
Recent Dartmouth graduates and other young alumni now have the opportunity to join in this new sub-committee, which was founded to foster ties between older
and younger alumni. The many events that are currently being planned include happy hours both within the club and with other schools, and trips to visit
the alumni clubs in other cities as well as hosting those members in Washington. If you are interested in being a part of this fun sub-committee,
contact one of the Young Alumni Coordinators:
Erin Emery ’06 or
Neil Hartz ’07 or
Brian Scullin ’09.
Ivy Singles Social Club
The Ivy Singles Social Club (ISSC) is a coalition of Ivy League, Seven Sisters and other schools’ alumni associations. Most event
attendees are singles in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, but all ages are welcome. For more information,
visit their web site.
