Alumni initiative for one-year non-profit and public-sector fellowships

Are you interested in Dartmouth having…

… more graduates trying careers in public and community service?

… a corporate recruiting alternative for the public and non-profit sectors?

… more alumni/ae connecting around a shared interest in addressing problems in our society?

Alums are working to develop a pilot fellowship program that places graduating students in non-profits and public organizations with all of the above goals. E-mail Dartmouth Fellowship or Adam Tapley ’03 to learn more or become involved by being a mentor, organizing an event, or in many other ways.

Dartmouth Entrepreneural Network

In January, the Potomac chapter of Dartmouth Entrepreneural Network (DEN) held an inaugural networking event for the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area. It was a very successful evening of networking for local entrepreneurs, venture capital / private equity professionals and professional service providers with a Dartmouth connection – a great beginning of a new local organization.

On June 26th, Wayne Bardsley ’70, founder and president of Government Scientific Source, Inc., gave a well-received presentation on the subject “From employee to employer.”

The local DEN club organizers are expanding the core team now and inviting all interested volunteers and sponsors to join us for planning meetings. Stay tuned for further events and communications from this young energetic entrepreneurial club. Your comments / ideas / communications are welcomed by the core team.

Please contact Katya Kovalskaia Th’02 or Shawn Card Tu’05.

Anyone is welcome to attend and bring ideas for new events. Volunteering is a great way to use and develop professional skills in technology, finance, customer relations, communications, and event planning. If you would like to attend meetings or volunteer in any capacity, Contact club president Meg Sommerfeld ’90 at (301) 984-6066 or via e-mail.

Young Alumni Sub-Committee
Recent Dartmouth graduates and other young alumni now have the opportunity to join in this new sub-committee, which was founded to foster ties between older and younger alumni. The many events that are currently being planned include happy hours both within the Club and with other schools, and trips to visit the alumni clubs in other cities as well as hosting those members in Washington. If you are interested in being a part of this fun sub-committee, contact Young Alumni Coordinator Adrienne Draper ’04.

Civic Skills Training Program
Before the fall, spring and summer quarters, the Rockefeller Center at Dartmouth sends selected students to Washington, D.C. under the Civic Skills Training Program. The Program is designed to teach students who are interested in civil society about the structures and processes of the political and non-profit sectors, as well as the skills needed to excel in internships and jobs in those fields. Contact to participate in a future Civic Skills Training Program and share your experiences.

Mentoring Students in Civic Skills Training Programs While in D.C.
Up to 12 of the best students in the new gateway course for the public policy minor will be selected as First-Year Fellows in a new summer program in D.C. The Rockefeller Center faculty in Hanover believe it is vital that the First-Year Fellows are placed in policy positions where they can be guided by Mentors during their summer internships. Dartmouth alumni are asked if they are willing to mentor a student, to look out for his or her interests, to take to lunch on occasion to discuss the internship experience, and to alert the student to interesting hearings, public lectures, and other learning opportunities that may take place outside the office environment. Click here to see a letter (PDF format) from Professor Andrew Samwick, director of the Rockefeller Center, which lays out details of this innovative program.
