Dartmouth College Gospel Choir Concert

Sunday, January 15, 2012
7:00 p.m.

Bethesda Chevy Chase High School Auditorium
4301 East-West Highway
Bethesda, MD
Metro: Bethesda

Dartmouth College Gospel Choir

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with The Dartmouth College Gospel Choir, an amazing 80-member musical sensation that has performed at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration festivities, New Orleans’ Jazz Fest, and New York City’s Lincoln Center. The choir has also performed around the world in Italy, Switzerland, Greece, and Turkey. Now come hear them in your own backyard, as they appear in a public concert at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Maryland. The Choir is a diverse ensemble that sings everything from traditional gospel music to America the Beautiful to Michael Jackson hits. As Dartmouth’s Hopkins Center web page notes:

This event is being co-sponsored by the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association.

“The Dartmouth College Gospel Choir is irresistible–even if you’re standing outside a rehearsal when the Gospel Choir is singing, the music resonating through the walls causes an unexplainable energy to surge through your body which may result in an uncontrollable swaying of the body or just an uplifting of your spirits. Whatever the result, the choir’s combination of energy and passion is sure to be contagious. The DCGC performs a wide variety of gospel music ranging from spirituals to the most modern day contemporary hits including many non-traditional, innovative surprises. The choir performs with an amazing 12-piece band every fall and spring to large crowds in Spaulding Auditorium. Now in his sixth year, Artistic Director Walt Cunningham, out of Chicago, continues to impress audiences with a stunning choir and novel programming.”

Under the leadership of dynamic Walt Cunningham, Jr., the choir has seen its membership more than triple in the last five years. Cunningham, a Waterloo, Iowa, native who turned down a Julliard Scholarship to attend West Point, also works with professional gospel musicians in Chicago, regularly flying back and forth from the Windy City to Hanover.

If the Dartmouth Gospel Choir can sing outdoors in New Hampshire in January, just imagine what they can do here.

The choir often has their audience up on their feet by the end of the show.

Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Dartmouth College Gospel Choir and the B-CC High School theater department’s campaign to upgrade their auditorium lights.

Cost: Adults $10, children $5. Please click here to purchase tickets online using our secure site. If you have any questions about joining us at the Gospel Choir performance, please e-mail Meg Sommerfeld ’90.

This concert is open to the general public. Free parking is available in the school parking lot.

Mar 25

Gridiron Sunday Reprise

Sunday, March 25, 2012
Washington Renaissance Hotel
999 Ninth Street, N.W.
Washington, DC

Last year’s version of this historic annual musical comedy event was one of our most popular and fun events of the year, as those who attended can attest.

Here’s what the Gridiron Club says about this event:

“…one of the capital’s signature events. It is a reprise of an event we have been doing for 126 years, regaling an annual white-tie dinner with satire and songs that skewer presidents and congressional leaders, lobbyists, and sacred cows. …What they’ll see is our members – including well-known faces that might include John Dickerson of Slate, Al Hunt of Bloomberg, Jonathan Karl of ABC, John King of CNN, Mara Liaisson of NPR, Andrea Mitchell of NBC, Bob Schieffer of CBS, Chuck Todd of NBC and Judy Woodruff of PBS – performing songs and skits in costume. Syndicated columnist Mark Shields relays the speeches that were delivered the night before, which typically include remarks by the president and a leading Democrat and leading Republican.”

Tickets: $70 each for club members, $80 each for non-members. Please register and pay online, stating your membership status and number of tickets needed, at [link to be forthcoming] or RSVP to Bob Davidson by clicking here and send your check, made out to “The Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C.” to Bob Davidson at 138 Gresham Place, Falls Church, VA 22046. In any case, payment is due no later than March 14, 2012.
